General Info

Tucked away at 413 Nelson St E, Stillwater, MN 55082, United States, Matt's Basement is a tea house that feels both relaxed and thoughtfully curated. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere carries a casual charm that encourages you to slow down, browse the menu, and enjoy the experience. The space is welcoming without trying too hard, and that easygoing vibe quickly becomes part of what makes Matt's Basement memorable.

One of the first things that stands out is the drink selection. The Milk Tea Brown Sugar Tiger Strip with Tapioca Boba is easily one of the highlights on the menu. It arrives with beautiful brown sugar streaks lining the cup, and the flavor balances sweetness and richness surprisingly well. The tapioca boba adds that chewy texture people love in bubble tea, making each sip a mix of smooth milk tea and satisfying bites. If you enjoy drinks that feel indulgent but still refreshing, this one definitely earns its place among the café’s most talked-about items in reviews.

Another signature item that draws attention is the BLT Taco Bubble Waffle. It’s a creative combination that immediately sparks curiosity. The waffle itself has that classic bubble texture-crispy on the outside and soft inside-while the BLT-inspired filling adds a savory twist that contrasts nicely with the lightly sweet waffle base. It’s the kind of dish that feels playful and unique, perfect for sharing or enjoying as a casual snack while sipping tea.

Beyond the food and drinks, Matt's Basement offers a thoughtful range of services that make visitors feel comfortable and included. The tea house identifies as women-owned, which adds a sense of community support that many guests appreciate. It’s also LGBTQ+ friendly, creating a welcoming environment where people from different backgrounds can relax and enjoy their time.

Convenience is another strong point. Guests who prefer staying in can take advantage of delivery, while those visiting in person will appreciate the paid parking lot nearby. Accessibility is also considered, with a wheelchair accessible restroom available for visitors who need it. These details might seem small, but they make a big difference in creating a space that feels open and accommodating.

Overall, Matt's Basement blends a creative menu with a relaxed tea house atmosphere. Between the inventive dishes, the inviting setting, and the inclusive approach to service, it’s easy to see why people keep adding this spot to their list of favorite local locations in Stillwater. Whether you’re browsing reviews before visiting or simply exploring new places to enjoy bubble tea, Matt's Basement offers an experience that feels both casual and thoughtfully crafted.

“ Super cozy, super friendly, safe community space! Great boba tea - they even have ube!!! - our barista was super sweet, when he saw how excited I was about the ube tea, he told me about other ube snacks they had (a cereal bar and also a parfait!). Really really warm and cozy inside with a variety of seating and communal board games. They have vintage video game systems too but we did not use them - they’re hosting an N64 Mario Kart tournament soon! Lots of cool events and weekly programming. This is my new go-to spot for coffee and drinks downtown!!! ”

“ This place simply rocks. The owners are totally adorable an super friendly. Prices are perfect, with quality to match. I'm completely in love with the entire business model an vibes they got going on. We have quickly made this into our weekly tradition. They have so many spots to relax and enjoy the views or even playing games. Speaking of games, awesome selection you two... awesome! They are always so eagar to help with tips or tricks in the games. You can definitely tell this is a passion for them. Something they don't just own, or just work at, but something that's part of their happiness. I truly enjoy how much matt knows about games an is totally willing to talk about any game any platform. Again this isn't just a Boba shop, or a hole in the wall, but an ingenious hidden gem. With them celebrating their 1 year just recently, I wish them many many more to come. I hope you two continue to be a special place in my heart as well as in the heart of stillwater. Please, come check this place out. It's going to become something you cherish, I promise!!! ”

“ Best chill, kick spot with plenty of different different games, board games, electronic games, as well as a piano to play on! The drinks are yummy too! I hope this place sticks around for a long time, because there’s nowhere like it! Super peaceful on winter evenings and around summertime. It gets busy but it’s always a good crowd! The owner, Matt is super kind and very likable! He’s actually from California, and you can tell this place has Cali vibes My son and I love to go here and practice on the piano; he’s been taking lessons for a few months, so he enjoys showing off his skills here. PS: I just learned that they have movie nights, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for just two dollars ”

“ A fun (not little) coffee shop just off the main thoroughfare in downtown Stillwater. Large collection of games and activities available, fresh made drinks, and a very comforting atmosphere all around. ”

“ Absolutely loved to relax in this new lounge! The atmosphere was welcoming and cozy. The variety of games offered and events was encouraging as well. Plenty of comfortable seating. The restrooms were gender-inclusive. Would gladly go back again! 7/12/25 - This is an absolute gem, especially if you’re looking for a welcoming, relaxed space to recharge during a day of shopping. We stopped in for a quick break and ended up staying longer than expected simply because the vibes were so great. It’s not a bar, but rather a cozy, inclusive hangout spot that feels like a mix between a local lounge, creative studio, and community hub. The owner was incredibly accommodating, greeting us warmly and making sure we felt right at home. You can tell this place was built with intention. It’s inviting to everyone, no matter your age, interests, or background. Whether you’re there to relax, socialize, or just explore, Matt’s Basement makes space for it all. One of our favorite parts was the variety of media displayed throughout the space; everything from books and art to music and games. It made the environment feel dynamic and personal, like you were hanging out in a friend’s basement with way cooler taste. It’s rare to find a spot like this; laid-back, creative, and genuinely kind-hearted. If you’re in Stillwater and need a break from the crowds or shops, do yourself a favor and stop in. We’re already looking forward to visiting again! ”

“ This might my favorite place in Stillwater! Matt’s Basement is delightfully unexpected with a mix of locals and tourists. The spot is right by the trolley stop. They have boba waffles and boba teas. They get their ice cream from a local creamery and my insider tip is that it is actually the best ice cream in town. They have puzzles, lounging areas, games and I’ve included a few pics of their recent vintage video game event. ”

“ We were looking for coffee in downtown Stillwater and stumbled across this place that had a Cold Brew Boba Latte! Couldn’t pass up 2 of my favorite things, coffee and boba, all in one. Would definitely get it again! There were also a lot of waffle options. We tried the Maple Bacon and it was delicious. Very fun inside with lots of board games, a piano you can play, bean bag chairs, and lots of seating available. Just about a block off the Main Street in downtown but ideal for grabbing a treat and walking the river or Main Street or playing games inside! ”

“ Great relaxing, quaint spot in Stillwater, MN that I would highly recommend checking out. Been here twice after walking around the Stillwater bridges loop.Tried their strawberries & Cream Waffle and it was Delicious!! Can't wait to try some of the other flavors of waffles they offer. They offer Boba bubble teas as well as lemonade with different flavored pearls in them. I've had a lemonade with mango pearls and one with strawberry pearls. Both very good and refreshing. Can't wait to try their ice cream next. Also, had a chance to talk to the owner Matt, and hear his story of moving from California to Minnesota and staring Matt's Basement. Thanks for taking the time to chat, it made the experience more personable. ”
